Found!! A New Best Friend For The Dog That Survived The NYC Snow Storm

SHE FOUND A NEW HOME!! CLICK HERE!!

This morning, as a buddy of mine drove to work via the Williamsburg Bridge, he noticed something: a small gray dog chained to the pedestrian walkway, shivering, completely drenched and half-frozen. As you probably heard, New York had a very big snow storm last night; we’re almost certain her owners left her out in it overnight to die.

001

That same dog is now sleeping comfortably at my feet, well-fed, fully-bathed, and having been given a clean bill of health by the local vet.

005

My friend brought the dog to his office and spent the entire day making calls, not realizing how hard it is to find a home for a pit bull. Something like 1 in 800 rescued pit bulls find homes, and as far as I can tell, no “no-kill” shelter will accept them. I offered to take the dog for the night, since I live closer to my buddy’s office than he does.

002

Since she showed up to my apartment, she’s been a doll. Hasn’t barked once – in fact, I think the only sound I’ve heard was when she began whimpering when I left the room.

She’s young – the vet estimated her to be 1-2 years old. She knows how to sit, seems to understand stay, and is one of those great dogs that stays very close to your side, leash or no leash. Also, she has a gorgeous gray coat, and as you can see, neither her ears nor tail are clipped. Finally, she’s been exceptionally friendly and playful, both with my roommates and all 30+ co-workers at my friend’s office.

003

My friend’s going to take her back tomorrow and try to find her a home, but prospects are not looking hopeful, and eventually he’ll have to take her to a kill shelter. He asked if I’d put up some pictures on my site to see if anyone out there might be interested in taking her in, or perhaps has some advice on what to do with her (we e-mailed a few pit bull rescue groups, but they had little to offer).

Don’t get me wrong – I am fully aware that she’s a pit bull, and that there’s a rep that goes along with the breed. But this one has been well-behaved and quiet, and I just interrupted her sleep to scratch her belly and all she did was kick her foot and wag her tail happily.

She seems like a beautiful pet for the right person, and if you’re at all interested, please do not hesitate to e-mail me at nycscout@gmail.com. I’ll put you in touch with the person who found her and of course, you would certainly be able to meet her before committing to anything.

006

Anyway, I just finished eating a burrito and some nachos, and I noticed the dog watching me, looking for a treat. At first, my “master” instinct kicked in and I told her to go lay down, which she did. But then I broke down and gave her some left-overs.

After all, she just spent the night in one of the worst snow storms of the year, and probably only has a short time left anyway – why not spoil her a little before she’s gone?

-SCOUT

PS – If you can do anything to help spread the word via Facebook/Twitter/Tumblr, both me and my new lady friend would be forever in your debt.

  1. Probably shouldn’t have read this…just got finished getting ready for work and the mascarra’s going to run! Poor little thing! She is absolutely beautiful! Angels are certainly looking out for her. By the looks of it she’ll have a new forever home soon! Thanks to you guys for taking care of her and to everyone for spreading the word. Can’t wait to hear the good news!

  2. It really warms me to see that you have few offers for a home creeping up in the comments. I know everyone has good intentions to bring her to a shelter but i think that a home is the best solution for this beautiful dog.

my fingers are crossed that she has a home to go to soon! we have an older pit mix and a very small apartment otherwise I would have left work already to come and get her.

please keep us updated on her status and (i wont say if…) when she gets adopted.

  3. Hi – I work with an animal rescue group in the city and we may be able to help. I sent you a couple of messages to your email address – just want to give you a heads up so they don’t end up getting blocked by your spam filter….Zahra

  4. I live in FL; I just saw this link on FB from a good friend in WI, and I reposted. I’m not in a position to adopt her, but please know how widespread the network trying to find a home for this girl is. If it hasn’t already been suggested, try posting her story at http://www.dailypuppy.com ; the daily puppy regularly features recently rescued dogs needing a permanent home, and it gets tons of hits. Best of luck, and thank you guys for rescuing her. Hang in there.

  5. Retweeted & shared with the Stubby Dog Project on Facebook (they’re all about creating good publicity for bully breeds).

I know exactly what you and your friend are going through with regard to shelters and bully breeds. I found a pit bull on the streets in October 2009 and was absolutely turned away from a number of organizations, despite her sweet disposition. In the end, we kept her and she’s been a joyful addition to our home. We originally had trepidations because we have another much smaller dog and two cats, but it’s not been an issue. Our Lola’s the same exact coloring as the dog you found, so the photos really tugged at my heartstrings.

  6. Hi there,

I put this on my tumblr and going to put it on my facebook and twitter when I get home. I sent it to two of my old co-workers who are also great at finding homes for doggies. One of them is actually very interested in this beautiful pup. So hopefully she will contact you today.

I really hope she finds a home or even a temporary home for now. She is just TOO beautiful.

I would take her myself, but I fear my apartment is too small and I’m out of my apartment from 630am till about 620pm so i think she would be sad all cooped up.

I’ll keep on trying to find more options for her. Thank you for posting this.

  7. (oh, also? she’s absolutely gorgeous. Let her know that as long as she stays with you, at every opportunity.)

  8. Oh, what a beautiful girl!

I will share this link, and wish I was still in NY and had room for a dog. <3

  9. PS Also, I know it’s a pain when you’re trying to do the right thing and find her a home, but please carefully vet whoever you do send her home with. When we posted our dog to Craigslist, hoping she was just a runaway and to find her original owners, we got contacted by lots of dodgy folks–two of whom, with a little Googling, turned out to be associated with local dog fighting groups. Just a warning based on our experiences trying to rehome a bully dog.

  10. Please try to give this a few days if possible. Please do not put her in a no kill shelter. We’re going to help you find a place for her. I’m sending this out via my social networking sites and talking to my family who is pet-friendly and always knows the right people to call. She deserves a home after all she’s been through. Cruel is leaving your dog out in a snow storm, but it’s more cruel to chain your dog so they are forced to deal through that condition.

    Thank you for posting.

  11. i’ve spread the word and wish i could take her! i live in brooklyn and have a car so if she needs to be driven out of the city to a good home just let me know!!!!

  12. Breaks my heart. I’d take her in a heartbeat if I were I NYC. Thank you for taking her in! (I’ve tweeted + fb’ed your post. Please keep us updated!)

  13. Please be VERY CAREFUL about who you let adopt her. This is kind of like advertising “Free to goood home” and can have some very horrendous consequences for the dog. If you didn’t live in NY I would definitely consider her coming to live at our home. She seems like a real doll! Good luck and please let us know how it goes. Thank you and your friend for taking her in and caring for her.

  14. Hey I was just wondering if you know if she gets along with other dogs? She is very beautiful. 🙂

  15. Wow. I wish I could take her. I reposted it on my Twitter and Facebook.

How big is she (weight wise)? I’d forwarded this onto my mother and she was curious – I think she could possibly be interested in adopting her if she’s not too big.

  16. From a friend in NYC who works with no-kill shelters and fosters:

“I would definitely have him call the Pets For Life hotline: 917-468-2938. More details can be found here: http://www.humanesociety.org/animal_community/shelters/pets_for_life_nyc.html I’m going to make some calls to see if someone can provide foster care and if a rescue can do a “courtesy post” about her. This girl is beyond lucky to have been found and taken in before something terrible happened. Keeping her out of the shelter system is really the only way for her to be safe.”

  17. If you don’t manage to find someone to take this puppy, I would suggest you call best Friends Animal society, they’re the largest no-kill animal shelter in the US. They’r ein Utah, but they take in dogs from across the country. If they can’t find a home for this puppy they will keep her in the sacntuary, which is gorgeous and HUGE.

    1. I just received a message from “BFAS” stating that this info is going out across their network! Their twitter address is @BFAS .

  18. Bless you for taking her in. I can’t believe how cruel some people can be, leaving her in the snow like that. I’d have her but am already over my quota of pets for my apartment!

  19. please DO NOT take her to the ACC or a kill shelter! this dog deserves a fighting chance and giving her one or a few days is not enough time. between all the people on here trying to help and the networks out there, she can find a home.

rescue ink does nothing to help animals. they have never pulled a single animal from animal care and control. they focus on ONE dog when there are millions in new york city put to sleep every year.

please please keep networking her and im sure something will come through. just DO NOT take her to ACC!!!

  20. Please do NOT send this dog to a shelter. I am actively reaching out to the rescue organization I work with hoping there is a foster home available.

  21. I’d agree with the others who mentioned Barc, I got my cat there and they often have good adoptable pits and pit mixes. Also, it might be an off chance, but I often see flyers for missing pits (I live in Greenpoint) so maybe someone found her lost, thought ‘Great! A new dog!’ Changed their mind, and left her for dead. Long story short, it’s an off chance but she might be mirco chipped. I’d bring her to Barc. They can find out and if not.might be able to take her.

  22. Try People For Animals rescue in Hillside NJ, or Rawhide Rescue in Green Brook, NJ. They take in pit bulls and aren’t that far from NYC. Pinups For Pitbulls is really great at publicizing cases of pitties that are in critical need of a home – contact them and see if they will post a link to this blog on their Facebook page.

If you find a home for her on your own, please carefully vet the people interested in her. Far too many people want pits for all the wrong reasons. Consider asking for a small adoption fee ($100 or so) to help weed out more unscrupulous people. You can always donate that money to a local animal shelter.

THANK YOU for taking this dog in. Pit bulls are some of the most wonderful (and most mistreated) dogs in the world. If I didn’t already have two pit mixes of my own, I’d take this dog in a heartbeat.

  23. I just saw this and posted it on my facebook and also emailed a few friends that own pits and are active in the pitbull community, so hopefully something will turn up for this lovely girl. I wish I could take her in myself. Keep us posted on her story, please. It’s literally breaking my heart.

  24. This is terrible, to think that somebody could be so inhumane to such a beautiful, loving animal that just wants to love you back is unreal. I have a boxer, two rottweiler-pittbull brothers and sisters, and a golden retriever who are all a bunch of massive dogs who think they are lapdogs. They love other dogs and could use a new friend. I live in upstate New York and would like to know if you are still looking for an owner. Let me know as soon as possible. Thank you!

  25. I wish I were in NY and not Minneapolis, I would scoop her up in a second. I just posted this on Fbook and Tumblr. She is absolutely beautiful and I pray she finds a great home. Thank you for being so generous and kind.

  26. I wish I were closer so I could help you out. I have posted this to my Twitter and Facebook in hopes that one of the animal lovers on there will be able to help. Please keep us posted as to how it turns out. There has to be an alternative to a kill shelter!!

  27. The rescue Pets Alive in Middletown NY may be able to help http://www.petsalive.com. They often rescue pitties and they are no-kill. They’re a great place! This poor girl has been through so much – it’s so disgusting what some people do…
    Good luck!!

  28. I’d take her in a heartbeat if we could arrange transport to Seattle!

Seconding the “be careful” – lots of people out there looking for bait dogs, schools that experiment on “free” animals, etc. I foster for a local pit bull rescue organization and have two of my own!

  29. I’m forwarding this to my sister who lives in the city and is looking for a dog. We have experience with bully breeds and know what wonderful, devoted pets they can be! Will be in touch if she’s interested! Best of luck either way. She’s gorgeous!

  30. I’ve already sent you an email to this effect, but we will take her if you can’t find someone closer. PB’s have an undeserved (in my experience) reputation, the ones I’ve know have been absolute sweethearts, unless they’re made mean by wanna-be-macho owners or bad circumstances.

I can’t stand to see this story not have a happy ending.

  31. Please be extremely careful, as the comments above reflect. there are unsavory folks that look for animals like this to use as bait or they will tke them then sell them to med labs or whatever, Lots of shody folks that have no compassion, God Bless.

  32. Is it possible she was stolen from her home? I had a shar-pei I raised from birth and when he was 8 he was stolen from my yard and used as a bait dog for dog fighting. Hopefully, if this is the case, her original owners see one of the many blog/facebook/twitter posts! Best of luck!

  33. I think what you are doing is wonderful & hurrah to all those on here workin to find this pretty girl a home! I would wait a few days, even a week though, before handing her over to even the best home situation. I, being a victim of having my dog stolen myself, wouldnt be too quick to judge that it was necessarily her owner that left her like that. My pit/shep mix was stolen & found abandoned in an alleyway tied up to a chain fence. If she sits & is well behaved, she may have come from a loving home. You do not mention if she has been spayed or scanned for an ID chip. Id post a few more found ads at shelters & in the area first. Would be a shame to give her away when she may have a loving family. If that isnt the case though… seeing from this amazing response… she is sure to find a loving home soon either way!! Keep us posted!!

  34. Indeed, please be careful about who expresses interest in adopting her. PLEASE write me back and look into all the NO-KILL shelter links many of the folks here are offering. I am tweeting, and have posted on Facebook and Tumblr. PLEASE try to release her to a NO-KILL shelter or reputable foster network. If NO ONE can take her, I will step up and foster her myself. I already have one pit (a rescue) and a chihuahua (rescued from same Brooklyn shelter) and a cat I rescued myself eight years ago. But if your friend does not manage to get in touch with a shelter please please please contact me.

  35. I’m here via tumblr. I reblogged the article from one of the sites above, posted it to my facebook, and put it out on twitter. I also sent an email to Villalobos Pit Rescue to see if they had any NY resources. I asked them to contact you. If you find a no kill rescue that needs a donation to take the dog, I would be happy to contribute.

    JoAnne

  36. I would take her in a heartbeat if I could.

I tumbl’d/RT/FB’d. I hope you can find a good forever home for her. In the meantime, give her lots of hugs 🙂

  37. retweeting, posting on FB, I’m sure she’ll get a home. I can’t have a dog here and I’ve three cats, or I’d be tempted!

  38. But she looks so happy to be with you! (hint, hint)She is so beautiful, just the perfect dog, and I bet she would be forever loyal to you. Is there any way you could keep her? Please don’t let her go to a shelter.

  39. I would love to take this dog in. Located in NJ about 10 minutes from downtown NYC. Previously owned a pit. Love them. Let me know.

  40. I sent an e-mail to nycscout@gmail.com, but I thought I’d post here as well. My wife and I lost our almost 2 year old pit puppy, Lucy, about a month ago and I don’t think we’ll ever recover. She was the light of our lives and I don’t know if we’ll ever totally recover, but there’s a hole in our family (the two of us and two scrappy pug dogs) that we’ve been debating whether or not to fill.

Then she sent me a link to this. No words, just the link.

We used to live in NYC but have moved to DC. We still have a studio in Manhattan (my wife is a literary agent), but our main home is in DC, a nice little house with a little yard and a great dog park near by. Our dogs are our kids. We train them with positive reinforcement, but mostly dote on them. We all pile into bed together. That’s just the way we roll and I don’t apologize for it.

If you say the word, I’ll get in the car tonight and come get her. I’ll take care of her and give her a loving home and you’d be doing us a big favor. Lucy was tied up to a post in Van Courtland park; that’s how she came into our lives. It’s only fitting that we continue the tradition.

    1. matt, you are amazing to offer that! i hope you get her! thats truly incredible of you. i wish there were more people like you in this world, not the assholes that left her behind.

  41. I wish I could take her but, over in Wash. state in a no-pet apt. My son and his family have had their beautiful red pitbull for 9 yrs now. She’s grown up with the kids, loves everybody, is part of every family holiday, she grins, she pouts, you can see on her face when you’ve hurt her feelings by telling her to go to her bed. They are so human, it’s ridiculous that they’ve been given a bad rep by people who trained them to be mean becuz they are very sweet and loving by nature and easily trained. I really hope somebody will give this one a chance. You already heard she’s got a great personality. Now she needs love.

  42. You should contact the North Shore Animal League in Long Island. It is only 40 minutes outside of the city and they are the largest no-kill shelter in the nation.

  43. Hey, i just emailed you – but in case you didnt see it. i can help. I know a shelter that will take her in NJ and I’ll drive her their myself. Happy to help.

  44. What a beautiful blue baby! I have two pitbulls myself and they are wonderful dogs. It’s true they have a bad reputation but anyone who has spent any time around them can attest to the fact that they’re wonderful, as I’m sure you’re realizing now. I really hope you find someone to take her! I’ll repost on facebook.

  45. If she’s not yet spayed, the ASPCA has a program where they spay/neuter pit bulls for free.
If you need help with placement (checking possible homes out) I’d be glad to help. I sent your poster out to my rescue list.
    Best, Sharon WOOF!

  46. Came to your post via Twitter. So sad, and what a beautiful dog.
Please consider bringing her to the Brooklyn Animal Research Coalition (www.barcshelter.org). They are a no-kill shelter, and also known for handling large breed dogs.

  47. Several members of my family have pit bulls and they are all very sweet. She is beautiful. We are no where New York or I would definitely show this to my sister. How awesome to have people like you who are willing to help find her a home. Good luck!!

  48. Seems like a bunch of people have suggestions, including one who is looking for a Foster home.
Before I go all out to try and find a home, can you update this page so we know if you’ve made some progress? Dan in New Jersey says he want the dog!

    What’s up?

  49. Try Animal Haven. They’re in Soho. Also, Waggin’ Train. You can find them on Petfinder. Waggin’ Train pulls pits out of the NYACC all the time, so they might help. Do you know how she does on her own or around other dogs?

  50. Just saw her on Facebook via a friend’s page. I’m in Florida, so while I can’t help, I posted on my facebook, and sent directly to a friend of mine in NY who has a male pit…I think he needs a girlfriend, whether he’s neutered or not! *crosses fingers*

  51. I’m glad there are so many good people willing to help. I hope someone finds the owner and chains him/her to a post overnight in a storm. NO animal deserves that, except the piece of dirt who did it to her.

  52. I wish I could take her but alas, I live in Chicago and have no way of picking her up. Please give her all the time you can. Pits get a bad rap but it’s the owner who sucks, not the dog. My sister has a pit that is the sweetest, most loving dog dog I’ve ever met. I would be happy to contribute money to her care as long as you keep her in your care; please let me know.

  53. First off, thank you for what you’re doing. So many people wouldn’t bother to help simply because she’s a pit.

Secondly, have you tried the NYC based group Bruised Not Broken? Here’s their website:

    http://www.bruisednotbroken.com/

Sending all good karma from Washington state,
    Stefanie

  54. I just reposted this on Facebook. I hope this girl gets a lovely new home! And to the folks who don’t get to adopt her – check out your local shelters and animal rescue groups!!! There are literally millions of pets still out there, just waiting for loving homes. And I guarantee that each one has a story of his or her own!

  55. From all the comments, it looks like you are getting some good ideas for around the NYC area, but I volunteer for PAWS in Chicago (largest no-kill shelter in the midwest) and I know there is at least one pitbull in there now. It may seem far, but getting her to a place she will be safe is a much better option than taking her to a shelter where they euthanize animals if they aren’t adopted. Good luck!

  56. Ill post on my facebook…many of my friends do animal rescue.
This seems like a really sweet dog and I hope she finds a home. Please dont take her to a kill shelter!!!

  57. Please don’t give her to a kill shelter. This lovely lady deserves a forever home and a good life with persons who would never mistreat her in such a way. Leaving an animal out in a blizzard is horrific and this dog deserves better. If she is indeed stolen, try looking around for lost dog reports and ask the vet to check for a microchip.

Re-posting and reaching out to anyone who may be able to help.

  58. If I were allowed to have another dog, I’d be on my way to NYC. Unfortunately, the county I live in only permits 3 dogs per household.

To all of the people who posted: “I wish I lived closer…I’d take her” Think about it. Would you drive across state lines to adopt a child? This is no different. This beautiful dog needs a loving home for the rest of her life. I drove 10 hours roundtrip to adopt one of my dogs. It was worth every mile!

If you could take her…then you should. Don’t let distance be a factor. Its a great reason for a roadtrip!

  59. With all the support coming from NYC and further, I hope to hear a happy ending. I put the story on Facebook.

  60. I would too take her, except I’m @ Sao Paulo, Brazil, and just adopted a dog! Her name is Mila and “she” posted your cry for help to her FB. We are really hoping to a happy ending to this story. Good luck, take care and congratulations on being such a nice person.

  61. Try newyorkbullycrew.org By the way, the behavior you described is typical of most pit bulls. They just get a bad reputation because you only hear about the ones that have bad owners that train them to be aggressive. I have two and they are the most laid back, gentle dogs EVER. Now my chihuahua mix – he snaps at the slightest thing!

  62. What a beautiful doggy! I’m sure there are plenty of people out there who’d love to adopt this dog. I know I would if I had the space. Have you tried listing her on Petfinder.com?

  63. I may be interested in adopting this dog. I live in Park Slope Brooklyn, NY. I have rescued other dogs and have owned pitbulls before. I currently own one dog (a rescue) who is older, and have been looking to adopt another since my former roommate moved back to New Hampshire and took his pitbull with him. I am gainfully employed and have a house in the country for weekends with lots of land. This is not a firm offer to adopt, but this is an offer to get more information. Sparklydelite@gmail.com

  64. I’m at work and can’t read all the comments right now so please forgive me if I’m repeating myself. Have you tried Sean Casey Rescue in Brooklyn (http://www.nyanimalrescue.org/)? You could also maybe get some advice and a posting from Sarah at Foster Dogs NYC (http://fosterdogsnyc.blogspot.com/).

I’ll repost and hope she finds a place, she sure is a beauty.

Oh, and if she’s had exposure to cats and other dogs I’m sure people would be interested to hear about that, too. If I hadn’t recently picked up a canine challenge off the street I’d be all over her.

  65. Also try Sean Casey Animal rescue, they’re a no-kill shelter in Brooklyn and may be able to take her. Good luck, thanks for doing the right thing, she’s beautiful!

  66. If you’re having trouble finding someone to adopt, contact Animal Haven (www.animalhavenshelter.org) asap! We can help you find someone to adopt her!
We’re a no-kill shelter and we have some of the most sophisticated treatment, care, and help out of most shelters.

    – A volunteer who works at AH

  67. She is beautiful!Bless you & your friend for taking care of her. I wish Oklahoma was closer, as we could give her a good home. Good luck!

  68. Thank you so much for posting this and caring for her. Please take the time to report this and any animal abuse to the local authorities. I pray that she lands in a beautiful home with loving people.

  69. I have fostered pit bulls in the past through an organization called “Stray from the Heart.” Their info is on Facebook and the website is http://www.strayfromtheheart.org/
I wish I could give her a forever home, but I am traveling too much! Good luck!

  70. Thank you so much for taking this dog in! I volunteer at Bideawee on 38th St, so I’m going to find out if there is anyway we can take in another dog right now. Also, I’m sure you already took the following steps but if she is young there is a good chance she’s microchipped, I would go to any vet or shelter and ask them to scan her for it. If nothing comes up, put her on petfinder.com, it’s a huge database for pets trying to find homes. In the meantime, keep her for as long as you can, she seems like such a sweet girl; a soldier nonetheless, with a lot of love to give!

  71. I would love to get my hands on the trash that left this poor dog out in the storm.
    Find her a good home.

  72. Oh my pants, she’s just gorgeous! I sent a message out on my google-reader as well as twitter. I’m in Houston or I’d come get her myself. I volunteer with the only shelter in Houston that takes in P-Bulls. They’re an incredibly misunderstood breed; very gorgeous and loyal. It’s when bad people get ‘hold of them that there are problems.

Thanks to you and your friend for rescuing her and at least showing her that not all people are jackwagons. Nice to see such a response in your comments as well. Please keep us posted!!

  73. That is a beautiful dog! And I’m all the way in MI in between homes and unable to have a pet! I really hope she finds a home. I spread the links out too and got my fingers crossed!

  74. Retweeted. I’m just sorry I live too far away to volunteer. She looks like a sweet girl.

There are no bad breeds: there are bad owners and there are bad dogs (usually caused by bad owners, but not always) but there are no breeds that are bad in and of themselves. She’s a sweet girl and deserves a good home.

Her former torturers deserve a night chained to a post in a blizzard.

  75. Hi, I’m so sad to hear a story so similar to the one of my own beautiful pitbull.

December 29, 2006 my brother (a former NYPD) found a 7 month old pitbull puppy wired to a post left to die. She was bitten and beat up (the vet concluded she was used as a bait dog) and my brother brought her home, hoping to find her home. We didnt have much luck and I ended up taking her. She is the sweetest and non violent dog I’ve ever met.

But my brother just got a pitbull from a shelter in the city that was no kill called Animal Haven. SO if you have trouble finding her a suitable home (be weary of the people who inquire about a pitbull, you dont want her to have a repeat experience)I would try this shelter!

  76. We would like to help this dog out and give her a home. Please contact me ASAP. She is beautiful.
