Found!! A New Best Friend For The Dog That Survived The NYC Snow Storm

SHE FOUND A NEW HOME!! CLICK HERE!!

This morning, as a buddy of mine drove to work via the Williamsburg Bridge, he noticed something: a small gray dog chained to the pedestrian walkway, shivering, completely drenched and half-frozen. As you probably heard, New York had a very big snow storm last night; we’re almost certain her owners left her out in it overnight to die.

001

That same dog is now sleeping comfortably at my feet, well-fed, fully-bathed, and having been given a clean bill of health by the local vet.

005

My friend brought the dog to his office and spent the entire day making calls, not realizing how hard it is to find a home for a pit bull. Something like 1 in 800 rescued pit bulls find homes, and as far as I can tell, no “no-kill” shelter will accept them. I offered to take the dog for the night, since I live closer to my buddy’s office than he does.

002

Since she showed up to my apartment, she’s been a doll. Hasn’t barked once – in fact, I think the only sound I’ve heard was when she began whimpering when I left the room.

She’s young – the vet estimated her to be 1-2 years old. She knows how to sit, seems to understand stay, and is one of those great dogs that stays very close to your side, leash or no leash. Also, she has a gorgeous gray coat, and as you can see, neither her ears nor tail are clipped. Finally, she’s been exceptionally friendly and playful, both with my roommates and all 30+ co-workers at my friend’s office.

003

My friend’s going to take her back tomorrow and try to find her a home, but prospects are not looking hopeful, and eventually he’ll have to take her to a kill shelter. He asked if I’d put up some pictures on my site to see if anyone out there might be interested in taking her in, or perhaps has some advice on what to do with her (we e-mailed a few pit bull rescue groups, but they had little to offer).

Don’t get me wrong – I am fully aware that she’s a pit bull, and that there’s a rep that goes along with the breed. But this one has been well-behaved and quiet, and I just interrupted her sleep to scratch her belly and all she did was kick her foot and wag her tail happily.

She seems like a beautiful pet for the right person, and if you’re at all interested, please do not hesitate to e-mail me at nycscout@gmail.com. I’ll put you in touch with the person who found her and of course, you would certainly be able to meet her before committing to anything.

006

Anyway, I just finished eating a burrito and some nachos, and I noticed the dog watching me, looking for a treat. At first, my “master” instinct kicked in and I told her to go lay down, which she did. But then I broke down and gave her some left-overs.

After all, she just spent the night in one of the worst snow storms of the year, and probably only has a short time left anyway – why not spoil her a little before she’s gone?

PS – If you can do anything to help spread the word via Facebook/Twitter/Tumblr, both me and my new lady friend would be forever in your debt.

  1. I also posted this on my Tumblr. If your friend cannot find this gorgeous girl a home, PLUTO- http://members.petfinder.com/~NY190/ or the Staten Island Council For Animal Welfare- http://members.petfinder.com/~NY34/index.html in Staten Island may take her in to find her a home. Both organizations do weekend adoptions at Petsmart, and they’re both great. PLUTO gives animals foster homes until they get adopted, and they visit the homes of potential adopters to make sure its a good home. I would take her in, but I already have 4 dogs. Good luck, I hope she finds a home soon!

  2. I just emailed my mom about the dog. She reminds me of our dog, Roxy, who was left at a shelter. If I had the room at my home, I would take her in a heartbeat. Did the vet happen to say how she reacted around other dogs?

      1. Thanks. If you can, shoot me an email about it once you speak with him. You can retrieve my email address from when I left a post, correct?

  3. I’ve had nothing but great experiences with pit bulls. They’re wonderful dogs and this one is a beauty.

  4. Just left a message for a friend on facebook. She’s good at finding homes for dogs. Hopefully someone can help.

  5. This story just breaks my heart; people can be so cruel. Thanks to you and your friend for saving a life and taking her in, even if it is only temporary. She deserves a much better life than she’s had so far! I bet a warm apartment and some table scraps have done her a world of good. 🙂

I volunteer with our local animal shelter, and we get a lot of pitties coming through. While I’ve met some dangerous ones, I’ve also met dangerous labs and retrievers! And some of the sweetest and most loyal dogs I know are pit bulls.

Here’s a nice resource for rescue centers specifically for pit bulls, if you can’t find an adopter: http://www.pbrc.net/

Also, the SF Bay Area has a great group that does rescue and advocacy for pit bulls. Perhaps there’s an NYC equivalent? They have some great general information on their site: http://www.badrap.org/rescue/stray.html

  6. I’ve also spread the word – surely there’s someone out there for this gorgeous dog! A lot of knitters/spinners/crocheters are animal people, so I’m hoping maybe the fiber community can come through for her!

      1. Try Rawhide Rescue in Greenbrook NJ they will take in pitbulls and will put them in foster homes till they find their forever home…sent a message to a friend that works with them to see if she can help out….before you send her to a shelter as a last resort let me know I can see what I can do….I can not keep her but I would help if came to that…

  7. I am living in a super tiny apartment, in a building that doesn’t allow animals, otherwise I couldn’t resist. Really hoping somebody takes this dog in – she looks so sweet. Can you update us letting us know how it turns out? I’m gonna pass this around, just in case anyone I know is looking for a dog.

  8. All the way from Australia, I have my fingers crossed for this beautiful dog! I’ve spread the word and really hope she finds a loving home. This story made me cry 🙁

  9. She looks so wonderful. Fingers crossed from Sweden!

Please give her som time, it will take time to spread the words on the internet, but I am sure you can find a home. If you havent already, see if you can contact some local newspaper. Sometimes they like to do a sad-story about abandon dogs.

Fingers crossed, really and a great hug to your friend that took care of her!!

  10. Bless you <3 Ten times over, for your kindness, for the life you lead as the person you are, and the example that you set. I wish you the greatest success in your film and all your other ventures. <3

    Namaste~

  11. If she were not so far away, I would take her in a heart beat. I live in Indiana, so obviously that’s a bit of a drive. I posted this on my Tumblr so that hopefully it would be spread around, since I know people from everywhere. She’s the most gorgeous dog…I can’t stand to think that she wouldn’t be able to find a home. God bless you for helping her!

  12. Thank you for taking this dog in. Unfortunately this city isn’t kind to the breed. I have posted this and will make some calls today. Have some people in mind already.

  13. Thank you for helping this beautiful dog. As you can see in my avatar, I’m a pit bull owner myself. Pits don’t deserve the bad rep they have…in the early part of the 20th century, they were called Nanny Dogs, for their ability to lovingly and stoically withstand child’s play. Hellen Keller even had one! Mine are well-trained, love everyone they meet, and have never had aggression issues.

I’m in Minneapolis; there are two local shelters I work with who have taken out-of-state dogs before. A Rotta Love and Lucky Dog Rescue both specialize in so-called ‘dangerous’ breeds, like Rottweilers and Pit Bulls. It looks like you may have some promising leads, and may not need the info. If not, please look into the options above. I’d hate to see this dog put down at a kill shelter. She looks like a real gem!

  14. Hey – Shared this on Facebook. Please give this a couple of days – I know that we can find this beautiful girl a home. I would take her in, but my English Bulldog is protective and jealous. Thank you so much for your kind-heartedness. Just give us all some time to get the word out.

    Bless you.

  15. i posted on my facebook for all my rescue friends to see – i love this little girl and am begging you to have patience bc the right new parents will come along! i’ve fostered over 70 and the good people just come out of the woodwork!

  16. I’m also curious to how the dog acts around cats and kids. Your act of kindness is encouraging in today’s world. She is a beauty!!

  17. I really hate people that abuse animals… and she looks like such a wonderful girl. If I could take her in, I certainly would. I really hope she finds a home! I’ve RT’ed on twitter, trying to get the word out. I wonder if any of the area news stations would do a little bit on her?

  18. Hello from England! I’ve posted on Twitter and Facebook and asked a friend in New York to ask her friends (presumably more useful than lots of people in London going “Oh my God she is GORGEOUS!” which your new friend so obviously is.)

Very best of luck, I’m sure she’ll find a home soon thanks to your post.

  19. Aw, I just never understand how people can do things like that…..What a sweetheart & a beauty! I will be sure to post this on my blog, twitter and facebook. Has she found a home yet?

  20. Maybe her owner was in an accident? So much to be said for compulsory chip implants in animals. Hope she finds her owner or a great new home.

  21. Stay positive – Miracles do happen. We foster Pit Bulls for the local Philly Shelter + recently had foster hit the Jackpot!! She was adopted into a wonderful family, 3 children, a golden retriever, 3000 sq. ft. home + acres of property to frolic on. They adore her. Sending good vibes your way – persistence pays off when placing a pit bull, it only takes ONE person to put aside prejudices against the breed + give her the loving home she deserves. Good Luck, my friend.

  22. despite their reputation the breed is very friendly if treated well and trained appropriately. Just keep them on the lead outside because they are very protective and will attack other dogs.

  23. I emailed my friend in Vegas. Her boss is a judge who rescued animals. I pray that her experience will find a home for this beauty. I hate that I can’t take her, but I’m living with my parents. I pray that she finds a no-kill shelter. It brings tears to my eyes to think that she will die. God bless you and your friend.

  24. what a beauty? Such a clever breed and really they get such a lot of bad press on this side of pond also (such a pity). A neighbour of mine swears that they’re great with children.

You don’t know for sure that she was left out to die. Maybe the owner couldn’t get back to her due to the snow. Have you checked with local vets and local police?

I am happy to post this to my http://twitter.com/plantmad and http://www.facebook.com/thegardendesignco

Hope you get a nice home for her.

  25. It seems doubtful a healthy, beautiful, well behaved dog like that was dumped by her owners. Someone obviously spent time caring for and training her. Why would they then leave her to freeze in a snow storm? It think it’s more likely the dog may have been stolen. I’ve had a dog stolen before and it was devastating. We never got him back. In searching for him, I was surprised to find out how often it happens. You should check yr local Craig’s list lost pet section and the local shelters to see if someone is looking for her.

  26. Sending your link to a friend who lives in Brooklyn. I know she and her hubby won’t be able to take her in, but they have a pit bull (and a baby!) maybe they will know someone who would be willing to.

  27. First, you may want to consider fate placing this dog into your care. When a dog meets human bonding occurs through a release of a hormone called oxytocin within each. Its probably happening.

Second, you may want to think about stop referring to your new friend as a pit bull. She looks like a labrador retriever/bull terrier mix. This dog does not look like the type that would grab onto a bull and never let go.

Good luck. I’ll never understand the human capability to be cruel.

  28. There are no bad breeds, just bad owners. A pitbull can be raised to be an AMAZING, loyal and affectionate dog. They just need lots of exercise and love. I live in another country, but I hope she finds a home.

  29. Posted to Twitter/Facebook. And I’m asking coworkers. If all else fails, have you tried Animal Haven? They’re a no-kill shelter and they do take pitbulls, although they’re usually pretty full. Still, if your furry friend is healthy, young, sociable, and knows commands, I would think they could probably place her fairly fast. Good luck!

  30. a friend liked to this on twitter + i have to say, you + your friend are good guys to have rescued this pup + given her a place to stay temporarily. i’ll spread the word on twitter + facebook – hopefully this sweet hound can find a home.

also, picture #2 makes me exceptionally happy.

  31. I’d take her in a minute. Im a dog lover of the highest order and I hope the people who left her out to suffer can someday experience a similar fate. So angry. If there’s a way I can get her I’ll do my best to figure it out. I live in California and my Folks live in Chicago. Will do all I can to figure out some form of solution. Do not panic. The kill shelter should be a last option. Be patient. Somebody will get this figured out sooner than later. I can’t afford to have her “Shipped” here but if everyone wants to pitch in, Ill give her a warm happy home. I can be contacted at BlackThunderX4@gmail.com. In the mean time, I am reposting this on facebook and twitter.

  32. I am angered with what they tried to do with her. >:( Still, it’s good she was saved in a nick of time. I’m from The Philippines but I’ll try to make the most of what I can do using Facebook.

  33. I’d take her in a minute. Im a dog lover of the highest order and I hope the people who left her out to suffer can someday experience a similar fate. So angry. 34. Hi Fellows!! C’mon. Don’t be defeatist. To consider the kill shelter after … what… a few hours or one day…? is almost on par with leaving the dog in the snow to freeze. I know that’s harsh but it’s the unfortunate truth.

Thank you of course for the rescue and care!! However…

Please talk to your friend and rephrase that statement in your post which is *really* upsetting. You just got started! The kill shelters in New York City — otherwise known as the ACC – Animal Care & Control — are no place for ANY animal from caring people. To make that statement almost negates what you both did – after writing how wonderful the dog is. Then, you are going to send the dog to his probable death anyway? Or else you are just trying to make a point. Either way, the fact that you are already contemplating that after a few hours or a day? That is giving up before starting! I’m astonished.

I have read the heartbreaking stories about animals left and looking for homes at the ACC – if you read them, you wouldn’t be so quick to write that you are considering it.

Check out Sean Casey Animal Rescue, 153 E. 3 Street Brooklyn, New York 11218 718-436-5163, rescues a lot of dogs and pit bulls. Unfortunately, until they get a home, they are kept in a large room in cages so directly finding a home would be best.

Give the dog a proper chance. Stay in it, fellows! There’s a lot of misconceptions about pit bulls – don’t buy into it.

The ACC (Animal Care & Control) Shelter system in NYC needs TOTAL reformation. (http://shelterreform.org.)

Also WABC recent story : Allegations of neglect at City Shelter: http://abclocal.go.com/wabc/story?section=news/investigators&id=7806635

We need LESS people giving up their animals to the ACC (NYC Animal Care & Control Shelter) so quickly – like these people who left the dog in the snow; the kill shelter is almost on par WITH THAT.

See Facebook page : Pets on Death Row.

Thank you for helping and, really, STAY IN THERE. Cathryn

  35. Scout, I have a friend who does animal rescue so I’m going to give her this link and tell her to get in touch with you so that hopefully she can find a home or work something out for that beautiful baby of yours. Would take her in a heartbeat, but our dog is old and wouldn’t tolerate a new member of the family. I told the DH we needed two at one time. *sigh* Next time I WILL prevail on that issue. 😀

  36. I recently adopted a pit bull from Break The Chain Pit Bull Rescue in Tennessee. I’m going to send this link to Leslie and James at BTC- they have a LOT of connections with rescues across the country and hopefully they will be able to find either a forever home, or at least a foster home so the kill shelter can be avoided!!!!!

  37. This is so sad! I spread the word on facebook. She’s got lots of people trying to find her a home now!

  38. Such a beautiful pup – doing my part to spread the word here in Michigan and on twitter/FB, etc. Fingers crossed she looks like an amazing dog & hopefully can find a home!

  39. So sad..
I hope you find a home for her, it’s such a shame that a beautiful and well-behaved dog should have to pay for the breed’s reputation.
Kudos to you and your friend for taking her in!

  40. If you could transport this dog to the UK, i’ll definitely give her a safe, loving home. She is just lovely. It is so sad how anyone could be so cruel. Like I said, If she could be brought to Britain (Wales), i’d have her. It should be illegal to have a beautiful creature like this put down.

  41. hey! saw this via someone’s tumblr. there’s a no kill shelter in Elmsford New York that would gladly take him. I don’t know the address off hand but I think it’s a Humane Society one. please look into it!

  42. I know it’s a stretch, but the albemarle SPCA in Charlottesville,VA does accept pitbulls, I’ve seen them before there. I wish to God I could take her in, she looks like a little angel.

  43. Any update on whether someone wants to take her? If she had to go to a kill shelter I think I would drive to NYC from Canada and pick her up. She’s sooo beautiful and deserves a loving home. Thanks for posting!

  44. I don’t understand the cruelty of people and how they treat their animals. Thank you for sharing this story. I hope you can find a good home for him. I spread the word on my FB page and on retweeted on Twitter. Hopefully, someone will step forward. Thinking good thoughts!

  45. She’s definitely a pit, I don’t think a mix at all. She’s beautiful! I truly hope you can find a home for her. I’m crossing all my fingers and toes.

  46. put it on facebook – what a gorgeous creature. Thank you for having such a kind soul to take her in. Someone will be so happy to include her in their family. I hope you will hang on to her instead of taking her to a shelter. Maybe some other friends can foster her until a home is found. Don’t give up on this little girl!

  47. Scout,

I sent you an email and have no idea which will reach you first. I would be interested in giving the puppy a home.

    Regards,

    Joseph

  48. She’s Gorgeous! Looks like a such a good girl, too! There are so many rescues. I’ve shared on FB & will share w/ a few of them. Brooklyn & Manhattan shelters are full of pitties that are PTS daily. 🙁

  49. At the very least, if we can find transport down here to Florida, my husband and I can foster her until we find her a home. We are in the Western panhandle. Anybody up for a little road trip???

  50. PS: Do try a local animal hospital or maybe the ASPCA so they can scan her for a chip. If she has one they can possibly find owner and charges can possibly be filed for animal cruelty.

  51. I just emailed you. Has he been around cats or other dogs? We have a cat, so not sure if they’ll get along. Either way, would love to try.

  52. I do think this dog is absolutely beautiful and if I could take on a dog right now, I would come to NY and pick her up and bring her home. But I can’t. However, I live in Utah, and I know that there is a shelter in southern utah called Best Friends Sanctuary http://www.bestfriends.org/ that takes on animals and is a NO KILL shelter. They actually house many of the Michael Vick pitbulls that can’t be adopted, and they will live there in a run until they die. So.. if no one takes her you could try and contact them, I am sure they would either take her or know of some place / some one who could. Good luck!

  53. Hi,

What a gorgeous creature! Will put out the word, I live out of state
right now, but would gladly taker her (my pug wuld luv a play-mate)!
    xoxo

  54. Hello

I just read your post on facebook…New Jersey has tons of no kill rescue groups…Rawhide Rescue is where I got my pitbull from..The dogs are in foster homes till they are placed in forever homes…Please do not take her to a shelter in New York..I e-mailed my friend who works with Rawhide so I am hoping we can help you out..If you need anymore info let me know….

  55. There are several no kill shelters in CT that accept pit bulls. In fact, the New Haven shelter is mostly full of pit bulls in need of homes. Worst case scenario, she could come to New Haven until we can find her a home.

  56. If we didn’t just rescue a dog in May 2010… BUT I’m willing to put a few $$ in for shipping if Tony in CA can take the puppy! Also emailing everyone I know and tweeting this.

  57. I am retweeting, and hope she soon finds a home, if she hasn’t already. As others have said, she was clearly loved and cared for at some point, and I hope she soon will be again. A friend has a pit bull, and it’s the friendliest dog ever. A good one is a great dog! Unfortunately, I’m in no position to take her myself, but I’m sure someone will.

  58. Hey man, this is a great thing you’re doing for this dog here, but I’m here to talk about taking her from ya. I live in Staten Island and I’m always in Brooklyn and Manhattan so it won’t be a problem of meeting up and taking her. I’ll send you an email with more info ’cause I need to check in with my mom and stuff. 🙂

  59. Hey there – there is a blog called Bruised not Broken and they take in Pitties. You can find them on Facebook under BNB. Please call them or contact Brooke. If not, please call the Animal Haven in Soho and see if they can help, but PLEASE do not bring her to a kill shelter – she won’t even have a week before she will be put down. Please email me with an update and maybe I can find another foster before you have to get rid of her.

    Thanks,

    Serena

  60. She is a beautiful dog! I hope she finds a good home; the only problem, I see people have been wondering how she will behave with other dogs. I don’t want to be a nay-sayer, or do anything that may affect this dog from getting adopted, but I’m not so sure it’s a good idea to introduce this grown-up dog into a home that already has another dog. I already had a dog, but when my daughter got a pit bull puppy, I took care of her for a year (I wanted to train her in a way that I know a 20 year old wouldn’t). The dogs got along great and were the best of friends. Then one day out of the blue, they had three fights before nightfall (the pit bull just wouldn’t let up), and I sadly realized they had to be separated at all times, and I certainly could not leave them alone. Thankfully, my daughter was in a position where she could take her dog. Since then, we have tried a few times to reintroduce the dogs, but to no success. She is a wonderful dog, great around children, and I am comforted knowing she is there protecting my single daughter as she goes off on her own; I would just be cautious about introducing this beautiful girl into a situation where she may end up homeless again down the road.

  61. Please don’t bring her to a “kill” shelter!! There are tons of no-kill shelters in the NYC area! Meanwhile, we all will do whatever we can to help. Too bad you or your friend can’t keep her — I am a fatalist. Someone found a dog on the side of the road and saved it’s life, therefore she is “meant to be” with that person. Just sayin’. I will share on FB and Twitter as well. I am very well-connected in the dog world.

  62. This is breaking my heart. I’ve spread the message on Twitter and Facebook. This beautiful dog could have been abandoned by someone who could no longer afford to feed it, or who was told by their landlord they couldn’t have it anymore. (I know NYCHA-Public Housing has now banned their tenants from having pit bulls and this has caused so many tenants to hide their dogs or give them away.) NYC shelters are full of unwanted dogs but outside of the metro area, you’re likely to find rescue groups and no-kill shelters. I hope you find a good home for him soon.

  63. My family will give her a good home. We are in Eastern Connecticut. Nice yard, kids, other pets. If she still needs a home please email me. 🙂 You are doing a very kind thing. ~Love

  64. You are a great person for putting this up and giving this beautiful dog an opportunity to find a great home. I noticed someone else asked about her reaction to other dogs, how about cats? I live in NJ and have been looking to rescue a dog for a while now, but I do have a cat who loves dogs – just need the dog to love the cat as well. I’ve reposted this link on my blog and social networking sites too, in hopes she can be rescued. NJ has a great program called Wag On In Rescue. I don’t know if they take pit bulls, but it’s a great program. Something to look into and if you have any idea about the cat thing, let me know. Thanks!

  65. thank you so much for taking this dog in, ya’ll are both wonderful people. if i didn’t live in GA i’d have her in a heartbeat. she could be my puppy’s twin! please give us an update on what’s going on with her, adoption vs shelter and if we can start a fund to send her somewhere she can have a loving family.

thanks again for taking her in!

  66. How absolutely heartbreaking! I’ll never understand how people can do things like this to an animal. I unfortunately can’t take her, as my cockapoo is a handful all by himself, but I have posted this on Facebook and will let you know if anyone on my end is interested. In the meantime, thank you so much for taking her in and being her foster dad for the time being!

  67. I’ve retweeted and posted on my facebook page. We have a few friends in the NY area, I’m hoping they might know someone who would take her. She’s gorgeous!

  68. Thank you for your empathy and kindness to this poor animal!

I know our beloved City is harsh on these dogs, but there are a couple of places on LI you could try before you give up (I noticed a lot of the no-kill places ppl are suggesting, while I’m sure worthy, are a little too far away…) try Last Chance Animal Rescue http://www.lcarf.org/, North Shore Animal League http://www.animalleague.org, or ARF http://www.arfhamptons.org

And please keep us updated, if you would! Thank you again 🙂

  69. She is a beautiful dog, she deserves more, as the owner of a Pit-Bull who won’t even bite a steak if its not well done (and cut in pieces I might add) this story breaks my heart. I have passed on the link, and in the meantime if you could create a paypal account, I would happily donate money to help feed her and provide her with dingo bones until she finds her forever home!!!

    God bless you

  70. I have posted this artice on my facebook as well as forwarded the link to the story from my work account. I am inspired and amazed at all the support this little lady has gotten. It’s nice to know that there are so many animal lovers out there…Just incredible!!!

I see a BRIGHT future for this little pitbull, and thank you for making us aware and putting her in the spotlight 🙂

All the best and happy New Year

  71. Shared down here in Austin,TX. She looks like a sweet little lady so I hope she finds someone who love her the way she deserves.

  72. scout,

i emailed you about her, I will gladly take her. I live in jersey and have 2 dogs already. If you knew how she reacts around other dogs it would be great, but either way, i would love to help.

    dave

    1. Err, sorry, accidentally hit the Submit button too early.

Just wanted to let you know that word seems to be spreading fast on Tumblr about this gorgeous pit. Just saying. :’) My sister and boyfriend live in the city and were planning on adopting a dog (specifically a pit or staffie)… it’s a little too early in terms of timing but I’ll still be sure to let them know about this doll.

  73. She’s a beautiful dog. Have you tried your local craigslist? We often have people looking for pitbulls on ours. She’s gorgeous. 🙂 I’ll share this link around my network as well. 🙂

  74. Posted to my Facebook page. I used to live on LI and I have lots of rescue friends in the area. Hope something comes through.

  75. Have you found a place for the dog yet? If not I’m going to text my cousin who has an american stratfordshire terrier…and see if he or his friends know of anyone. She’s a beauty and looks just like his baby…

It’s horrible that someone would do this to her! She deserves a loving warm home.
