Someone Planted a Bicycle Garden in Queens!
Note: this has since been removed. I was driving along Vernon Blvd in Queens when I spotted something you don’t usually see under the 59th Street Bridge… A bicycle garden! Or, to be specific, a row of flowers made out of old bike parts: Very inventive stuff – check out this sunflower… The group responsible…
Stained Glass on the Subway
As the MTA rehabilitates subway and train stations across the city, about 1% of its annual budget is allotted for installing permanent art installations intended to “raise the quality of the ride.” It’s a fantastic program that means you could enter the 4-Train station at 167th St & Jerome in the Bronx… …and see this…
A Ghost Railway Line In The Bronx
Last week, I was scouting for woodland trails, which brought me up to Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. I’d never been before, and I randomly picked a trail and just started walking. A little ways in, I noticed something unusual off to the side of the trail… …A row of what almost looked like…
The Best Construction Fence Ever In New York City
For the past week, I’ve been scouting dozens of construction sites around Brooklyn and Queens, which means I’ve been running into the same boring green fencing pretty much everywhere (specifically, “hunter green,” as per city requirements). As I was driving around, I was suddenly reminded of the best construction fencing I think I’ve ever seen…
The Hungry Gargoyles of 110th Street
One of my favorite buildings in Morningside Heights is the Britannia at 527 West 110th Street. The building, built in 1909, is divided into two wings and features two rows of fantastic gargoyles below the second floor balconies: What makes this building particularly great is how low the gargoyles are to the ground. At only…

Hey, it ain’t easy being green… But somehow, both this lawn and Kermit manage to do it!
(You’re totally not crazy, by the way. I think it does, too!)
That’s two questions and the answer to both is “Yes!” 🙂
I think I know these buildings…Is this Forest Hills? If so I’ve lived close by my whole life and never gotten this unique perspective!
it’s not that easy having a tree growing out of your cheek
Yes Forest Hills at Queens Blvd and Yellowstone Blvd
It even has the seam on the top of his head! Too much detail for coincidence!
It’s not too surprising to find this greenspace at a development relatively close to the Kaufman Astoria Studios where Sesame Street is filmed.
What a coincidence! I wonder if the residents that overlook it think the same. Excellent perspective, by the way!
Fabulous high-rise shot Nick – from where did you take it??
That’s Parker Towers. While looking at the building, did you notice the end apartments are accessed via an exterior entrence on what appears at first glance to be terraces. The buildings were constructed this way to save on the cost of elevators and maximizing the floorplan.
In fact it IS fashioned after Kermit! The story goes that Jack Parker who built and owns this property did this for his grandson who absolutely loved Kermy.
