Remnants Of The Old Grand Central Cab Stop
I recently scouted a great parking garage on 44th between Vanderbilt and Madison. It’s right next to Grand Central Station, and was built quite a while ago. It shares some iconic Grand Central-esque features, from the brick in the walls to the zig-zagging arched roof over the ramp. While shooting pictures, I noticed something odd…
Inside The Fletcher Mansion on Fifth Avenue
If you’ve ever been annoyed at the fact that most of Fifth Avenue’s mansions probably don’t want you knocking at their front door, do yourself a favor and check out one most don’t realize is open to the public: the Ukrainian Institute at the corner of 79th Street and Fifth Ave, built in 1899 as…
The Stray Cats of New York City
Spend enough time in any part of the city and you’ll start noticing the resident stray cats foraging when no one is around. We’re getting ready to shoot in a park on the East Side, and every day, I’ve noticed these two guys running around. They’ve been very shy but seem hungry. During prep and…
Santaria At Old Trinity Cemetery
Last week, I was scouting the Church of the Intercession in Washington Heights… …and after, I took a quick swing through Old Trinity Cemetery to see if I could find anything…weird.
The Strangest Neighborhood In New York City
Last week, I was driving around in a southeastern area of the Bronx… …when the road I was following came to an abrupt end, with a series of signs forcing me to turn right. I turned… …and all of a sudden, it was like I was in a completely different world.
Elephants on East 10th Street
This building, 9 East 10th Street (once the home of author Dawn Powell), features a really, really neat building number sign. It’s beautifully ornate, especially on this otherwise unremarkable building. I love the African theme, sort of feels like it should be on the outside of a safari club (note: commenters are saying this is…

Nolita?
Did you ever notice the remains of a real church just some doors down?
yeah, scout… though it is technically north of little italy, great jones is very much in noho. and considering how tiny that designation is, noho needs every block it can claim…
That’s the firehouse we shot as a location for “Frequency”.
Sebastian – I have, and have been meaning to do a post on it forever…The lighting is always terrible whenever I go to take pictures. One of these days…
Garth and Eric – my bad, should really stop writing these things up after midnight…
Funny thing about this firehouse is that the same architects built an economy version of it on 518 W. 170th Street.
One more thing: I work one block down, on Bond Street, and it seems that every other week that street is hijacked by a film crew, including their large dressing room trucks and catering stands. What’s the deal with Bond Street?
Great building, designed by Flagg & Chambers – Earnest Flag also did the Scribner’s Building on 5th Avenue, with a similar great arch. I believe this was the home of the Fire Commisioner when it built.
